Adolescence is a time of self-discovery. The road to self-discovery is not easy, especially in an era of intense public scrutiny brought on by social media. At Holy Names, we strive to create an environment where all girls find their purpose and embrace their authentic selves while feeling valued and uplifted. Our academic and extracurricular programs are designed to nurture not just intellectual growth but also emotional intelligence and moral development. Recognizing the challenges our girls face in growing to be the best versions of themselves, we have incorporated renewed attention to character development in our Strategic Plan 2030.
As part of our commitment to fostering a positive environment, we are addressing the adverse influence of social media on our students’ interactions and their self-worth. This year we introduced a no cell phone policy during the school day. Next year, we will introduce programming for both students and parents to bring greater awareness to the negative effects digital platforms can sometimes have on relationships. By addressing these issues directly, we hope to equip our students with the tools to navigate their social worlds with confidence, kindness, and integrity.
This March, our students will present the musical Mean Girls under the direction of Fran DelSignore. This production is not just a theatrical performance; it is an opportunity to engage our students in meaningful conversations about the dynamics of friendship, the importance of kindness, and the impact of our words and actions on others. Theater has the ability to open hearts and minds, and we believe this show will encourage meaningful dialogue on these topics.
Also, we are embarking on a comprehensive review of our student handbook to ensure that our expectations for behavior are clear and that our disciplinary measures serve both to correct poor choices and to build character. We believe in the God-given dignity and worth of every person. Our goal is to maintain a school culture that aligns with our Catholic values—one where every student feels safe, respected, and loved.
As we move forward, we remain steadfast in our mission to educate confident young women of admirable character who will build a better world. Through thoughtful programming, a commitment to high standards, and the continued nurturing of our students’ moral and social development, we strive to create a school where every girl knows she is valued, supported, and empowered to be her best, most authentic self, in keeping with our motto Esse Quam Videri – to be, rather than to seem.
