Harriet’s kids is a girl’s group under the Alpha Chi Omega Chi women’s chapter of the National Association of Colored Women’s Club. This group focuses on carrying out the mission of Harriet Tubman and her values of empowering young women. They regularly host meetings and fundraisers to offer a mentoring service where the older girls guide the younger girls of the group. They also invite speakers, attend regional and national competitions, and coordinate volunteer opportunities. Makayla’s service to this organization was twofold: 1) She held a bagel breakfast to raise funds for the organization and 2) She assisted with the group’s ‘hotel sleepover girls’ night’. She set up a highly popular make-up station at the event. Maklayla raised awareness about Harriet’s Kids and their mission by creating a bulletin board at school.
